Link Baiting is essentially writing content or offering some item in a direct effort to attempt to obtain links from other sites. Usually, the content is outlandish, inflammatory, or grossly overdone to promote the linking effect.

If you want to get a good understanding of link baiting, look at newspaper headlines.

Ellie the idea behind linkbait is to create content that attracts links. It's not automatically about being over the top with sensationalized headlines, but sometimes that sensationalism can help attract people to your content in the first place.

There are several different hooks people use to generate linkbait. My choice would be to create a valuable resource. That kind of linkbait tends to attract traffic the entire time it's online.

With the debt management site in your signature think about how to provide something useful that other people will want to recommend by linking to it. Maybe you can write a series of articles on how to better manage your money or you could create a spreadsheet people could easily use to record their monthly budget to help keep them out of debt.

not all shiny things are made of gold. Thats another way to put it literally. link baiting is great and often attracts visitors. I could easily call it something short of hypnotic. it sometimes can give you the irresistible urge to click on the particular link.

Link bait - a link with a twist. Those are links that pointing to other page which offers something useful information or related to the topic. It's a good way of getting traffic and can increase ranking as well.

Useful or entertaining web content which compels users to link to it.
that is link baiting. An example is an email from from your friend to a social site that gives out free gifts, however upon your dismay, they don't even give you anything, just stupid things that might want to lure you to their site. Correct me if i'm wrong

Welcome to SEO David. I'm not sure there are ever two opinions within the industry that are exactly the same. Everyone seems to have their own definition for every little aspect of it. Kind of amusing when you think about it and watch people vehemently argue points when they're both essentially saying the same thing.

Link baiting (or linkbaiting) is the latest buzz word in the SEO world and has come to be the preferred way to natural link building.

It means to create something that naturally attract backlinks for your web page by getting people to talk about it, discussing it on forums, blogging about i, posting it on del.icio.us/Furl/Digg/Shoutwire and linking to it from their sites. It also attracts a lot of visitors.

Ellie, everything in life has pros and cons. Linkbaiting isn't an exception. Is it beneficial? Can if generate traffic? Depends on how well you can create linkbait.

If you can create content that gets people to link to it then most likely you'll receive traffic to that content, either directly through the links or through search engines. If you write content that you call linkbait, but no one links to it then you probably won't see any benefit of increased traffic.

Offering a free guide or tool can be a good way to get people to link to you. Of course if you write good quality original content people will always link to you and that's the best link bait there is!
