You might want to consider reading the Search Engine Optimization FAQ over at the SitePoint forums (disclosure: I'm a moderator there, and I'm only citing this resource because I personally feel it's a useful one that you'll be able to learn from) as well as Chris Beasley's SEO Guide.
I really can't say much for the posts and threads in this forum since I've been a member for less than 24 hours, but from what little I've read, I will probably end up deciding that this is a good resource for learning how to optimize a Web site for the search engines.
Whatever you do though, don't make your site for the search engines. They won't learn from you, they won't buy your products, comment on your blog, sign up for your forum, or anything else like that. People will be the ones doing that, so focus your energy on them (but don't ignore the search engines either).
