Friends,

I am wondering how google would know if i am selling links on my website if..

*If i do not use buy link word on my site.
*If i place paid links exactly where other useful sites are placed for visitors
*If i do not place nofollow tag when paid link is of different theme.

Kindly share your knowledge and suggestions

regards
Joey

It's very very simple.

If you want to sell advertising space on your pages DO SO!!!

All that seems to happen is that the toolbar PR goes, which of course means nothing anyway.

Why not redirect them anyway? Then you will be able to actually track the click-throughs and being able to show how much pre-qualified traffic you send to a page should make the links a more valuable commodity anyway.

I don't know how they find out but they do find out

I have come across big marketers in their forums and blogs talking about losing pagerank on account of their selling links from their sites

There are easier, less controversial ways to monetize your website

Google are trying to combat paid links that are bought solely for the purposes of manipulating PR and SERP positions, they don't mind paid links when they are done for the right reasons such as solely for traffic purpose.

Except they have no way to tell "intent" so they are taking a dim view of all paid links that might pass PR.. So they need to be nofollowed or run through an ad server, or javascript etc to keep that from happening to keep Google happy..

They are using humans for that, there robot still not effective in detecting paid links but it rises red flags to human being those come and check, some hints to hide your paid links:
- Do it include them in the footer or in the side bar
- Do not associate them with words like sponsored or advertisers
- Avoid site wide links
- Contextual links in related pages are the best not even human will be enable to detect them

Lot of people sell links and still maintaining high PR. Although there are cases some people lost their PR.

If you are concerned just use NOFOLLOW on the links you sell.
Example of NOFOLLOW link code <a href="http://www.webcosmoForums.com" rel="NOFOLLOW">Webmaster Forums</a>

I'd just avoid keywords like "buy ads" etc and it should be fine as long as you don't overdo the amount of paid links you have on the page. or just use adwords!

I too believed this at first. Now I am starting to suspect that Google have an alterier motive at hand. If everyone becomes scared of selling links on their site then what alternative do they have to generate income? Well the google product AdSense is the first to spring to mind.

I wonder how much extra AdSense clicks google got since they implemented this policy?

I'm probably just getting paranoid, but then again...

As a side note, Matt Cutts says that the penalty google will instow is the inabillity to pass page rank onto others.
