Why does it seem like it's so difficult to come to a consensus on Googles serps and PR. Like many other webmasters who have been observing for a year or so I think I most of what there is to know about it, but I try to keep my mouth shut on the subject. This is mostly because it seems there are so many long time pros who know about the subject and talk about it but rarely say the same thing, and we can't all be right.
Heres a thought, is anyone familliar with preliminary documentation for google's PR algorythm and such. From the secondhand account(s) I've read it sounds like this is an available and accurate documentation on google's initial development of their current process.
Secondly, what about the various claims of people having "cracked" the PR calculation, (even a personal friend of mine claimed that and I will ask him about it sometime). Im not talking about whoever made that "future PR calculator" or whatever, but arn't there those that have made serious experiments and made the results available?

I think maybe I could believe your friend, if he could show me his PR 10 website.

I truly think there must be someone on this world wide web, that knows the calculations, but I also think they are wise enough not to share it on this world wide web..........

Just my 2 cents worth....

Anybody who has cracked the PR calculation has retired to the Caymens by now as a millionaire. They certainly aren't hanging around these forums.

why's that? I think I know how to get a pr 10 site too, it doesn't mean I have the resources to do so.

thanks for the replies.

http://webworkshop.net has been called the home of pagerank due to the owner, Phil Craven, delivering one of the first 2 correct whitepapers on pagerank and the algo it uses. That paper is available on the site and makes understanding pagerank much simpler.

There are a number of pagerank calculators out there that accurately deliver the proper pagerank figures. It was not hard to do really.

Yes I guess my question is kinda typical and easily answered by searching around a bit. Thanks.

Why is everyone still caught up in the great PR chase.

My own view of the importance of PR is it has to be minimal. I will give you the simplist reason why I beleive this. Google tries very hard to keep its ranking algo a secret to stop us from changing the relevancy of their results. Google's relevancy is why it is the engine that it is today and they are not going to help anyone change that fact. With this in mind, why would they display a key part of there ranking system to anyone who wanted to view it.

Out of the hundreds of factors involved in Google's algo ranking, PR has to be the last and smallest one. If two sites have the same number of backlinks with same anchors and every other aspect of the Google algo is the same, its only then that PR effects there ranking with the site with the most being placed higher and what are the chances of that ever happening.

Don't get caught up in the great Page Rank chase! spend your time choosing werthy link partners and PR will be a by product anyway.

Oh i forgot to say

Completly agree with accesstimes. The conversion of page goes a little somthing like this.

If you have a link on a page with a PR of 10 and there are no other links on it, the link to your site will pass on roughly 85% of the PR.

If you have the same link but there are another two links on the page then the 85% of PR that is passed is divided between the three sites.

But that's not the point, the only use PR has to you there is the PR10 page must have good link popularity and it is that, that is worth having. A link from a page of the same theame that has high link popularity.
