Google has been a huge learning curve for me at
www.ProDryers.com. But as I have muscled through it all, I learned so much. Hopefully some of this will help:
1st, never pay anybody for seo unless they provide results first. Even at that, I would think 3 times before paying them if you have decent web skills.
2nd, Obviously, format the meta keywords and meta desc tags properly, and carefully title your site with maybe 3 key words. I use Hand Dryers | Baby Changing Stations | Restroom Supplies | ProDryers.com
3rd, Pay for the Google adwords. It seems the more ads you have running, the more links Google will see and it seemed to help me move up in natural listings over night.
4th, I did pay a service to submit my sites links every month to all major search engines for the first 6 months. I don't know for sure if it helped, but it seemed to.
5th, get in directory listings. I am still trying to get in the DMOZ (I think that is what it's called), but no luck!
6th, very important: If you can spare about 1400 per year, join the mcafee secure program. They scan your site every day and provide you with a real time link that displays their secure approval. They also give you 3 back links, and they are a PR 7
7th, Join shopping comparison sites like Pricegrabber, Nexttag, Yahoo Products, shopping.com, etc. - I noticed a huge leap up after I joined each of these. The cool thing is, you may set a monthly budget for pricegrabber, but for me, nobody ever clicks my products. I could care less because I am getting a flat rate to increase my Google PR.
8th, don't forget to lace your images with the alt tag. the alt tag will describe the image to the search engines and trust me, it is well worth it.
With all my hard work, I went from page 18 on hand dryers, baby changing stations, and some other key terms - all the way to page 3. I still have a lot of work to do, but it takes time. Another thing that calcs your Google PR is the weight of other back links and the age of your site. So by getting my links on Mcafee (a PR 7) and Price grabber (I think the PR is pretty high), and all the other places I mentioned, it helps improve your PR over time. But give it time! Nothing happens over night. you may have to wait a couple weeks to see Google really index you properly.
Good luck!
Tony
