It's nothing to do with updating or not

Let's take an incredibly simplistic view of toolbar PR and links just because I feel friendly today..

All of the links on the internet add up to the number "1".. The Google Toolbar PR that you see is some incremental representation of that number "1" that really has no value other than to sell text links on your website to rubes that think it matters..

So, the internet have all these links and you have a few and your toolbar PR is "3".. Now you don't get any new links at all for several months.. But the rest of the internet creates millions more links.. But, since all links always total up to the number "1", each link is now worth slightly less than it was before.. And since you didn't change anything, you didn't gain any new links, etc., your PR is now worth less than it was before, and your PR drops.. No big deal, everyone's did, you just happened to be near the edge and could actually see the tick as it fell from one number to the next..

Another possibility is that the links you had got devalued from some reason.. Maybe you had a couple of really good links pointing to your site but the owner of the link took it away.. Or Google came in and devalued his outbound link to you.. Again, through no action of your own, your PR will drop in the toolbar..

All that said, the important question to ask here is not, why did my PR drop, but did my rankings or traffic drop??

maybe the links you had before, aren't there anymore, have you checked your back links recently?

Dropping of PR during times other than the routine quarterly update might well be considered as a punishment for violating the established google norms like selling of links etc.

A friend of mine has a site with PR 2 for years and did little to the site. One day he decided to add bloggs and forums and spends every day writing in it. he jumped to PR4 in 6 mths. and still going strong. The site itself did not change much other than blog and forum. I think he just hit some interesting content and google appreciated it.

On another note I added a forum to my site and started added general info about my industry. within 1 month the forum got a PR2. So fast. Since then the spammers got onto it so hard (50 posts a day) and I have to had to turn off for a while (one of my to do list). Spammers what a ongoing drama.

Update is one aspect, but the most important thing is that you have as many as possible relevant websites linked back to your site. And if you have websites with high PR linked back to your site, that's even better.

I am far from a SEO expert, but do understand the concept quite well, as a matter of fact I have staff that work on back links in their spare time from other jobs for my main sites. Over all I have seen minimal PR jumps and I have at least 100,s of back links (as a matter of fact I have dropped reciently). However when i do new content I do see increases in traffic and followed by PR. So not sure if I agree on the time and effort by back links.
I would like to hear from others if they agree or disagree in this info.

PR has nothing to do with your website but with your linking strategy.

Having a good site with quality content on it usually brings better PR (people like to link to good stuff) than some linking strategy....But yes, PR is all about links....

Update is one of the handle by, but the most important thing is that you have relevant websites linked inbound to your site. Or you can also check every time of your imcoming links, they are live or not.

Obviously the Guy that started this post is looking for a explaination. minimal Links with good PR. I still think Traffic has a good value. back links as well, but not all they are cracked up to be considering the hrs you have to put in.
The way that i have it explained about Google and PR. Is Google has a closed box of all the rules you need to do to get good PR. the box is closed and no one knows what is in there. Every body can guess at best on what the rules are, but as Google changes from time to time there is no way to know.
Basically all about guess work. Trial and error and major hrs to get it right.
Thats my theory anyway.
