I have an e-commerce site hosted in the UK and I don't understand why we rank SERP 12 for a keyword phrase on google.co.uk and SERP 164 for google.com.

What I can not understand is why our UK based competitors who rank only marginally better than my site on google.co.uk are ranking significantly better than me on google.com.

For example;
Google.co.uk - mydomain.co.uk = SERP 12verses mycompetitor_A.com = SERP 6
Google.com - mydomain.co.uk = SERP 164 verses mycompetitor_A.com = SERP 14

Google.com and Google.co.uk are basically two different search engines. Each would consider different pages more relevant. Since your site is in the UK I'm going to assume you have a .co.uk domain and also host in the UK. Both are signals to Google that your site is in the UK and should rank above other sites not in the UK when searching through google.co.uk.

That doesn't mean you can't rank well in google.com, but that you're getting an extra boost in .co.uk.

In both your examples your competitor ranks, then some other sites rank, and then you rank. In google.com there are more sites you're competing with and so the difference between you and your competitor is greater.

I understand about your problem. But it will be always heard to follow up others website. Just do work hard on your website. The Google.com and Google.co.uk Both are different search engines. So is your website hosted on google.co.uk, then do build link on .uk websites.

There is a bigger competition in google.com, than google.co.uk, so you should work on your sites content (nice looking site btw), geting some backlinks, and there you go....I assume your competitor did some of this, right?
