At first you decide your business target keywords then optimize your website according these keywords.

1. Keyword research, perform as normal and select keywords that are most relevant to the business and the area they are in. Ideally you want keywords with very little competition but attract a decent amount of traffic. Of course you want to find as many keywords with your local areas in them as possible.

2. Set up Google Analytics and include the site with Google Maps and if you haven't already submit a site map with them while you are there. Webmaster Tools will also be handy to set up as it will show you how you are ranking in certain areas etc.

3. Again assuming we are targeting a local area then include the company address (at least a city and suburb) on all pages possible. Keeping it at the beginning or end of the body copy works well.

4. When doing your off page try and list with as many local directories, classifieds, portals or similar as possible. Same goes for getting links from other webmasters, try and keep them as local as possible where you can.

Outside of that I would do everything else as normal and while I like to chase the Niche keywords, in these cases I like to get ones that have a broader keyword in them also. Then as the site ages and earns more trust etc it will naturally progress on to bigger and better keywords.
