How effective could it be? Well, it depends on the following.
- Site's traffic (the traffic of the sites linking to yours) - if each of the site got 1000 unique visits a day, that's 2000 possible unique visits for you (if those visitors from other sites also visit yours). But it is impossible to hit the 100% mark that way. So let's say, a 10% conversion (visitors that click through to your site). And that's 200 unique visitors for you.
- Link Visibility (link position on the page that is linking to it) - A factor for conversion rate. If the link was placed on areas that visitors can't see, that'll result to lower conversion rate. (It is just hard to see things when you close your eyes)
- Link relativity (relevancy of the link on the content of the page that's linking it) - Another factor for conversion rate. If the link placed on the page isn't much related to what the page is telling to the visitor, that'll result again to lower conversion rate. Just think of a scenario where readers isn't contented of what he/she has read, of course, he/she would locate some other resources (related) on the page.
And so, I think what you need to do right now is monitor the traffic and conversion rate of those sites linking to yours (of which you are expecting traffic).
Hope it helps.
