Hi.

This is my first question/discussion for the forum, as I am a new member.

Getting right to my interest...

If someone has a domain name that is low in the category of "keyword searches" like:

example.com

and this keyword "example" is rarely searched...infact very unlikely to be searched...

would creating a subdomain using a keyword to another page help getting traffic to the site? for example, if i made a subdomain:

money/example.com

my intension would be to hopefully get more searches for money and directing traffic to this subdomain of my site, thus better over-all traffic should more find my home page from this subdomain. since my domain name is so unique and does not get searched as a keyword.

bottom line...would this work/ is this common practice? considering im only talking about getting better traffic from search results?

thanks for any replies or info, suggestions.

It will work. So let's say you create money.example.com and you have more links on money.example.com, it'll show up. If that' what you mean.

...in my question Im not considering "external links" (only internal) ...I'm only interested in "popular keywords people search"...and if I used a popular keyword that is not overly competitive, in my subdomain...would the search engine recognize the keyword over my maindomain example.com...is really what im getting at, providing more traffic from people who search this popular keyword?

heres what im seeing/intrested in:

if someone owns the domain name EARTH.COM and someone searches using the word "earth" then that site EARTH.COM usually comes up in the first page...as it is acually the main domain name of a site.

lots of people search the word 'earth" infact it about 13,000,000 a month. so id say that site gets alot of traffic because of thier "keyword" in the domain name.

MINE on the other hand...EXAMPLE.com...assuming onone searches the word "example" so if i were to make the subdomain EARTH.EXAMPLE.COM...would the search engine consider my subdomain as it does EARTH.COM in returning relevent results?

im already fimilar in SEO to make pages come up in search results for Page Titles/ Meta tags/ Page Headings and Content...i get my pages to comeup for keywords on my pages...but NOT FOR my domain name.

my interest is gaining more traffic by doing the subdomain...i got low traffic now...i just want to "increase traffic in search results" by way of a more "common keyword search"...rather then doing away with my porr choice of DOMAIN NAME *rolls eyes* i was such a newbie when i picked it

The only way a keyword in a domain name will help you is with ithe anchor text in inbound links. Other than that, it has no use for SEO.
why do websites earth.com rank 1st for earth? Well, probably because it talks a lot about earth. but also, everytime somebody links to it, it looks like www.earth.com and the anchor text is the link is what gives the keyword in the domain all the power.

I hope this answers your question

ok i can understand that...so i guess the keyword subdomain idea wouldnt work for better search results

hmmmm....so if in time my domain EXAMPLE.COM is anchored all over the web...but nobody searchs the word "example"....
the anchor text and the keyword "example" is still pretty much worthless? right? as far as getting traffic from search results on my domain name that is not searched?

bummer...thats sad news for me

well, it is worthless for optimization but if it's related to your topic then it's still useful for users.

It's not that much efforts. You could just buy the domain and set up a 301 redirect from your "old" domain to the new one.

Having said that, I don't think it will change much.
