I've to say, yes directory submission is effective in promoting your site. I submit to free web directory sites, and still worth it for my time and effort.

I have submitted to maybe 600 directories. That is hours and hours of works, thinking each one takes 2-7 minutes. The bad thing about it is that maybe 10% - 15% actually put you in their directory.

There are much more efficient means of building backlinks. Most directory entries are not even indexed at Google. The home page of directory sites are generally indexed but many category and sub-category pages where your listing will be will not be indexed. So the link is not really going to do you any good from a ranking perspective.

If you can find directories where the page where your listing will be IS indexed then go for it. Or you can afford to buy the sponsored or featured listings that will get and keep you on their home page or main category pages that are indexed, then go for it. They'll likely help.

But other than that, I think directory submissions are a time sink... using up valuable time you could spend building links other ways or generating good content.

I think it’s still value doing. You just need to prefer the right ones. Most of us notice that now a day’s web directory submission doesn't have a huge impact as it was before, but still there are some few superior ones out there. Just need to be picky in choosing a excellence web directory.

Yes, it is a good way to get backlinks. but you should carefully select the directories in which you are submitting and you have to keep the track of all directories which is again time consuming task..

I remember when directories already have a good effect on the results SEO ... But I do not agree with everything you said in this post. Now, they are of little value, unless the evidence was specialized. Most of my colleagues such as DMOZ and Yahoo as well.

Directory submissions is still effective. But not as effective as blog commenting, forum poting, or blogging.
