Of course, directory submission is still effective.
However, I believe that it's more effective to submit your site in couple of popular (if possible find niche directories) directories rather submitting it in hundreds of directories.

I remember when directories actually made a good impact on SEO results... but I do agree with everything you said in this post. Now, they are of little value, unless they are niche directories. Most of my colleagues like DMOZ and Yahoo as well.

That is a must for any SEO campaign, but that is not enough to have good results

I think Directory submission is very effective when it comes about getting one way links for a website home page and its internal pages

i don't think that it has impact unlike before, directory submission will help but not enough and it has less weight to make a good results and gain backlinks.

I think it can help new websites... But if you already have a huge and known website, there's probably better things to do than directory submission.

What about the $299 yahoo one? I have been thinking about submitting to them, but I don't know if it will be of any help.

If you have 299 dollars every year that you don't mind giving to Yahoo! in the hope that you get a listing that probably won't send any visitors at all and has no SE value because of a 302 redirect.
Go for it!

Directory submissions should always be the first step in any SEO campaign, however don't rely on that alone to get you anywhere if the keywords you target are remotely competitive.
Yes, they can still rank uncompetitive keywords tho, or low hanging fruit if you prefer that description.

Yes, directory submission is still effective but to make sure generate some traffic of your site you need to submit 1 article to at least 100 directories.

I think it's still effective depending on the quality of the directory though its results is quite minimal.

Directories are still valuable - but be careful... Overdoing it, like any link building strategy, can be a bad flag to a reviewer. I always do Yahoo for a campaign of any weight.

Yupi, it's still effective, and it gives higher impact if you'll link to high quality sites.

I have mixed feeling when it comes to directory submission because I read that google has devalued backlinks from many directories.
