You don't really get a choice.

Possibly because it's pulled it off the page somewhere.

Or its the date the site was first/last updated in google's "cache".

No, because that (if shown) appears alongside the "cached" link.

this happens to me too, and a lot of other bloggers i can imagine. It's because google sometimes looks at the start of your site for the description rather than showing the description that you have entered in the 'description' meta tag. The date is always shown first on a blog post, thats why google picks it up. It's something you cant really avoid unless you want to get rid of the date altogether

this is the date your last post to forum and google cache your forum, and next cache will show another fresh date when google cache your site...

in some conditions. its good for your site and its reflects the update time and date to your search engine visitors, i think it attract visitors if show it to your visitors.

I've never seen that happen to any of mine. But what really does it matter if there is a date? I don't get the hub-bub.

As far as I can see... there is nothing wrong with that. It can be considered as a good sign because search engines (Google and Yahoo in your example) are updating their content regarding your site/blog.

You know why it's totally irrelevant? Because it's only going to come up on a google search for some keywords, not others, it's all down to where on the page google is citing its description from. Since hotgoals football is the name of the page, it's clearly favouring the start of the page, where the name is, etc. But if someone found it on other keywords, it is likely it wouldn't show the date, it'd be showing another part of the page.

look...
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en...G=Search&meta=

see!

So really it was a totally stupid question because you'd only search for hotgoals football if you already knew the site existed. ALL OTHER SEARCHES leading to your site will FAIL TO SHOW THE DATE. Thus you are just whining.
