My site went from page 1 no 3 in Google to no ranking at all with the keyword 'shares explained'

Ive checked my site diagnostics and Google say there is duplicate title tags for

http://www.sharesexplained.com/
http://www.sharesexplained.com/index

I was wondering if duplicate title tag might be the reason why for the drop in rankings? If so does anyone know how I can sort this out?

given that they are exactly the same page you would pretty much expect them to be duplicate.

1/ I'd hazard a guess that your 404 page is set as the home page. (index.html)

2/ READ http://www.webmaster-talk.com/the-go...isappears.html

You should setup 301 redirects so that all of your pages are only accessible from one specific url. If someone doesn't include www in your url, redirect them to the www version of that page. If they get to http://www.sharesexplained.com/index.html then redirect them to just http://www.sharesexplained.com
You should also change all of your 'home' links to point to http://www.sharesexplained.com instead of linking to the index.html

how did you do your link building? maybe your site get penalize but it will be back soon, don't worry!

I think your best bet is to heed Chris' post. He's one of, if not the best resource I rely on all the time.

301 redirect is the simple solution

Yeah i agree use a redirect, however i do not think that is why it dropped in PR.. More likely its a mild penalty of some sort.. The keyword is too much like your website for it to be just a dupe issue... Check all outgoing links for bad neighbourhoods or easier yet all outgoing change to "nofollow"..

how old is your site? Is it new? Thats natural to new sites. If your site got good content then all you need is quality back links.

Even I'm seeing a lot of duplicates in my webmaster tools. I use wordpress and it has this nasty problem of producing duplicate pages for comments seperately..

Hi, I heard that your rankings would drop too if you haven't updated your site in awhile. I don't know how true this is, as I am learning myself. But nice advice on the www vs the not.

ask an expert, why don't hiring a group of expert people, and don't waste more time trying to do it by yourself? I think it's much better

It normally happens in google. If you want better rankings just make sure that your title is unique to every page

ME too same situation , duplicate meta description and my site goess from 1 to 3 and now i clear the duplicate desc.. and doing the same SEO as before.. this is not big issue I thing can be back soon.. without doing anything special for it..

domain.com and domain.com/index is just the same. . . I guess Chris is right on redirecting.
