Heeyz

my site has a pagerank 0
bit strange cause there's quite a few pr5 and 6 linking to me.
Also does anyone know how google gets the description for your site when indexing?

Cheers
Thierry

Pagerank is updated very infrequently so there's nothing to worry about. Just keep building your incoming links

Google gets the description for your site directly from your content and zooms to the part of the content where the keywords are found.

Hope this helps

ya, a couple pr 5 and 6 links arent enough. you need at least a 100 links, with any pr, but higher would be better, that are somewhat relevant to raise your pagerank a lot! good luck!!!

You don't need that much by any stretch of the imagination. When I was building nixpert.com before it was ever even close to completion and with only links from my signatures in about 3 forums I had a PR3 on the first update.

Also, although this has not been brought up in this thread I would like to state for anyone who might think so....PR0 is not a penalty, only the grey bar is a penalty. PR0 just means they have given you no rank yet.

Don't forget PR shown on the Google tool bar is only an estimate of PR that is not updated often. Even if the tool bar shows a PR0, in the Google index that is updated constantly your site may have PR.

If you want control your discription on Google, add a Meta description tag as follows.

<meta name="description" content="Add a good description here including your kywords.">

Hope this helps.

Google does not pay attention to meta description. It pay's most attention to the text on the page, and uses the title. Oh and lajkonik86 the title is used as the description 9 times out of 10.

If you conduct a search on Google for "web design" in pos.3 you will find.

HTML Help by The Web Design Group
HTMLHelp.com is maintained by the Web Design Group to provide Web authoring reference material, tips, and answers to frequently asked questions. ... ...
www.htmlhelp.com - 7k - Cached - Similar pages

Note: The description is taken from the pages meta description tag as follows.

<META NAME="Description" CONTENT="HTMLHelp.com is maintained by the Web Design Group to provide Web authoring reference material, tips, and answers to frequently asked questions.">

No where on the page or in the title does it contain the above description.

Using the above tag is a good way to control what description is given on Google and can dramaticly enhance your click through rate.

I stand corrected. That is the first time I have seen the description used. I always get the text around the keywords I use.

It is a very usefull tag and can be greatly used to your advantage to incorage click throughs. Tha tag also contributes to your keyword density so it is a good idea to include your keywords.

SEO is not just about obtaining traffic, it's true target is to increase sales. Any good SEO campaign should use every ethicle technique avaliable to ensure traffic is gained and more importantly, converted into sales. The above technique is one of the many tools that can be used to acheive this goal.

I already had a meta description like this:
<meta name="description" content="www.Top-Download.net The Ultimate place to start downloading demos, trailers, mods and full versions! KNOW what to download. Find the greatest and newest files in our Tops.">

But my description in google for my main page:
free website counter Cool Stuff. Forum. <. Demos. Trailers. G A M E S P O T.
Fileplanet. Men of Valor Demo. Tribes: Vengeance Multi-player ...

And on one of my other pages:
www.Top-Download.net The Ultimate place to start downloading demos, trailers, mods,
and full versions! KNOW what to download. Also check out our interactive half ...

I'm clueless to the how and why

Lucky enough i don't need to worry much about search engines.
Though would be nice to improve ranking a bit.

cptnwinky and james anderson are both right, Google use's the page content but can also on occasions use the description. Descriptions are usually used on sites where frames are used since the googlebot doesnt follow frames. Your content is however very important and Google does search for keywords on your content 9/10 times displaying the page content not the description.

As far as page rank just get more links, and bear in mind it was only recently google performed their last rank so it may take a while before you see the results. Best way to test is to type your url in the browser eg for my site I type "ejumblesale". This will display most of the links that are to your site, the more you get the better.

On a further note linking to a site with a high pr doesnt mean everything, the page rank is distributed between each link and so a pr5 could be so spread out it will barely make a difference to your own rank. The more higher pr's however, the better.

heres a good article on page rank http://www.zeromillion.com/webmarket...nk-system.html

Google ranks websites by the links and the quality from the links that point to a web site. But stay away from link farms, free for all links. They don't help you with your PageRank. You have a bigger change that your site get banned from the search engines than that you receive a PageRank boost.

Also, the best way to get your PR (PageRank) up on your site is to submit your site to numerous directories like http://www.dmoz.org/,http://www.yahoo.com/, http://www.goguides.org/, http://www.gimpsy.com/, http://www.zeal.com/

There are lots of other directories that you can find out there besides these. Just submit your site and before you know it you will be getting a much higher PR due to the sites linking to you.
