Url of images and alt tag can make big difference in ranking. Keep your content fresh and avoid using content from other sites. Duplicate content can kill you ranking in search engines.

Content is still the king, write quality content on your own. Do not copy it from some where else and modify it. Before publishing the content on your web site it is better to check it for duplicity for this purpose you can use tools like Copyscape or just Google it.

If you write your own content, why would you need to "check it for duplicity" ?

The "keywords" META tag is useless.
Google and Yahoo ignore that completely.
Some of the small time search engines might use that META tag, but really..who cares?

Additionally keep it to update because search engines always want new content, so feed them! Not only your website will grow automatically if you always add something to it, but also search engines tend to spider your website more often if they always find something new.

OnPage SEO is important and more than just the discussed Meta tags as people have mentioned. You have to understand your websites structrual hierarchy. Links should not have different anchor text interlinking then what you want to rank for. Links should not look like /fred%&flins-9998 for example. Make your links clean and be sure everything is interlinking properly. No follow the links that don't need the linkjuice and you'll grow your rankings.

meta tags, and meta keywords are worthless, and have no effect on SERPS

URL STructure, Title, Meta Description, Meta Tag, Keywords are very important in ONSITE SEO. You have to do those very carefully.
You cannot belive there are some guys got TOP # 1 for particular keywords due to ONSITE setup. So, C how ONSITE SEO is very important.
