Of course if you type this into the Google search box

site:www.mydomain.com

you will get a list of pages that are in the Google cache.

I've tried doing www.subdomain.mydomain.com

but it doesnt return anything (even though some pages in the subdomain obviously HAVE been indexed).

Any ideas how to check subs?

If you provide your site link to us than it will be easy to give you answer.

The only way I know to check indexed pages is the manual method of doing it. Typing in "site:URL" will give you the real-time, most accurate results.

What if you have hundreds of pages in your site? Yes, it is accurate but you need to alot time for this.

You could try using the Seoquake toolbar. Note that Seoquake toolbar has a lot of other uses as well.

You could check if the site is indexed by this command site:www.subdomain.mydomain.com same as you did on site:www.mydomain.com

That is true. SEO quake toolbar do have many important things which can let you know complete details about a website.
