Hey, I was looking at my webmaster tools from google and it showed 9 links to my site. I downloaded the table and it turned out all the links were from webmastertalk from when I was asking questions about improving the site. It increased my rank and now I'm showing up on top on some queries.

My question is does webmater-talk use rel=nofollow in order to stop link building by posting? If it does then why didn't it work for me? I looked through your source code and couldn't find anything.

And by the way I didn't do this on purpose, and would not recommend anyone to do this. It is very unethical, and can really make the admins mad. Thanks though!

Well, I was looking at the links and it turns out that all the links came from one that were within the code tags. I'm sure your site does have rel=nofollow, but it doesn't apply to the code tags.

If you look at the source of this page you can see that there is no rel="nofollow" on your link.

The link is till virtually worthless though.

Forums are great places where people share their knowledge and link in signature is like some incentive to them.

It cant have been a competitve term if 4 links from here put you towards the top surely.

The term was 'good ideas for bets' I don;t know where I am now, but last week I was #5.

As has been said above the links here are followed. They're likely low quality links. If it was the links that helped your page it's probably that the query 'good ideas for bets' isn't particularly competitive so a few low quality links could make a difference. Those same links wouldn't have your page ranking for something like the single word 'poker' for example, which I assume is a rather competitive query.

It does show that the links count for something, but you do have to consider specific queries to understand that they probably don't count for all that much.

Cool. Like I said before too, none of the links that were actually in the content were followed just the ones that were withing the [code] tags. Any idea why?

I agree. I was reading some google articles on increasing your page rank, and the best way to do it is by having great content. For some reason, even if you don't have very many quality links you can still have a great page rank just because of your content.

I agree with this. You should use Search Status plugin to help you identify dofollow links and nofollow links.
