Follow helps on backlinks to your website. Nofollow make this link like a banner, it's not a backlink, just a reference, where google will not index it like a backlink, propably not show this page when searching your website.

Dofollow is nothing but a absence of rel="nofollow"

no, the absence of rel="nofollow" is the absence of rel="nofollow".

dofollow is a term invented by SEO marketers as a way of BS'ing their clients.

rel="nofollow" is used to tell the search indexers that you are sick of all the spammers posting comments on your site thinking they will get backlinks.

Exactly Paul, having a rel="dofollow" attribute doesn't equate to the search engines automatically following that link. There's absolutely no code you can insert to tell them to do so, or "do follow" the link, as they might say.

OTOH, if you follow the micro-format trend, you can add, rev="vote-for" as a way to signify that you think a page is useful/important.
As to whether or not the search engines care....who knows?

I guess the so called "dofollow" are what the rest of the planet call "links". If it doesn't say, "rel=nofollow", it's not "dofollow", it's just a plain old link.

I don't think nofollow links are useless.. As long as these links are came from relevant sites, they are still useful and may help drive targeted traffic for your site.

Nofollow is a wierd html attribute invented by Google and their company. Similarly Dofollow is another wierd html attribute invented by their non-company members.

Just know that there is no need to really know these two attributes unless you want to get page rank to your site..

In btw, nofollow is real.. As someone says dofollow is non existance of nofollow in an html tag. There are also other attributes for rel that is rel="me", rel="home". Somehow there is no rel="you"! May be you can try as it does not matter to any body who sees an html link.

There is no need to tell the search engines to follow a link; it does do by default unless it finds a nofollow attribute or directive. Similarly, there's no need to tell the search engines to index a page; it does so by default unless it finds the noindex directive.

No it's not, a link is a link whether its nofollow or not. You can still click on it and be taken to the site or page that the link poits to. A link with rel="nofollow" is still a link, it just doesn't count as a backlink for SEO purposes when it has rel="nofollow".

That is the best explanation. But do you mean the search engines will index a page when it is linked from a site as nofollow? I don't believe this is the case. How is the noindex attribute used in an html tag? This is interesting to try out.

Noindex is a page level directive declared in meta tag. It's not an attribute attached to a link so I should have been more clear. What I meant was that you don't need to tell search engines explicitely to follow a link because that is their default action, much in the same way that you don't need to add <meta name="ROBOTS" content="INDEX" /> to your web pages to ensure that it will be indexed because that is the search engines default action.

You CAN'T tell the SE's to follow a link, that's the whole point. And just because there's no rel="nofollow", doesn't mean they automatically "follow" the link, it doesn't "follow" a link by default to pass on whatever PR or ranking power the link may theoretically provide.

Paul was explaining dofollow, not nofollow.
