Google operating system to take on Microsoft Windows.Google is planning its own operating system, in a direct challenge to Microsoft and its Windows hegemony. The New York Times and tech-news site Ars Technica, broke the news on their respective websites. Inquiries from the press forced Google to disclose the news a day earlier, last night, on their official blog, which gives a light rundown on why they're doing what they're doing.
In a nutshell, Google is looking to expand its Chrome web browser as an operating system for the cheap netbooks that have proliferated in the marketplace. Some initially believed we'd see a version of Android, Google's mobile computing platform, transmogrified into some type of operating system. But Google went with the Chrome platform instead. In the company's own words.

yup and that's the best way to start... a lot of younger people and older as well are starting off with a netbook or having a netbook on the side for portable purposes... once they start learning the google os and get used to it google can start launching their google computers...

Linux is free and open source and not many people use that ! after 10 years ofd being free ! While Microsoft has Office most people will always want Windows !
Then there are apps such as Photoshop, games etc that need Windows.
Why do companies always want world domination ?

Google Chrome has been created with cloud computing in mind. It will be a simple OS that will basically let you open and browser and use the internet.

Instead of using Microsoft Office, you can use Google Docs which is a free online Google version of a word processor, slideshow presenter (like Powerpoint), and excel-type workbook.

Instead of Photoshop, you can use the slightly less powerful online image editing application Aviary.

Google is not going for world domination, but is instead improving the internet for users many ways.

Aw, I thought google's going to launch a full-fledged OS which would unleash hell on microsoft's windows and bring it out of it's monopolic slumber and shake things up. Competition is good.:-)

I think google might be a chance to knock off Microsoft because there is a certain amount of distrust.
I wonder if MS will drop Bing just to protect their OS!

Great news! I agree with this statement. Its not about domination, its about improving the Internet. I think Google will continue to dominate the Internet considering the genius brains behind its everyday operations.

I can't wait for it to appear on PC. I want to try dual booting with it to see what it's like.
