Backlink Advice

Guys,
I know my site is good because I get emails almost every day thanking me for the great info and content. But, for the life of me, I cannot get any backlinks. Well, I have a few - a very few considering my traffic and the quantity of good content that I have. And considering how well-liked my site is by my readers, I just don't understand why more people aren't backlinking to me.
Anyway, I need a BackLinking 101. Nothing I've tried really works. Twittering gets me hits but no links. I've tried writing to related sites and no one writes me back. Plus, there aren't that many sites like mine anyway...Anyway, I'm at a loss. I don't know how people do it...
One other question: does Google only count the backlinks that are in the Google Webmaster Tools?

And, btw, I am sure this has been much written about. If somebody can give me the links with good ideas for how to do this, I'd love to read them!!

No, they count all the "dofollow" backlinks that they find. They only show a portion of them in Webmaster Tools and they show nofollow links there to, which apparently, they don't count

That explains a lot of things! Because I did get one great backlink about a week and a half ago and it never showed up in Google. But I think you're saying that it may never show up?!
So the bottom line is use Yahoo's Site Explorer, right?
Also, what is do follow, no follow? Can you say a little more about that? FE, Google will post the links in Google's webmaster forum which I'm sure has nothing to do with page ranking.

Not in Google Webmaster Tools anyway, but it would probably be in their database/datacenter.

Yahoo's Site Explorer tells you how many backlinks they found but only lists 1,000

Does your blog has trackback plugin so that it's easy for blogger to link to your site?

I disagree. I often find that many people just create links to my pages. I find them via the referrer column of my logs.

I heard it's a good idea to religiously try to create at least 5 backlinks a day to your site. There are many ways to do that such as submitting to directories and article writing on article sites. As well as commenting on other blogs obviously.
It is time consuming and can feel like its not worth it but keep doing it for months and in the end youll see a benefit to it.
That is why they say "you have to work hard"

Quality of back links are better compared to quantity!.. When your doing Off-Page Optimization, make sure your getting quality of back links.. Quality gives more weight value compared to those irrelevant sites that you are getting..

I think it's a mix of both, but if you can get a good quantity of quality then you're cookin n bookin. You have to keep on those who have quality links because they protect them like gold these days.

you should do one-way backlinks by hands. dont wish others to build backlinks for you.

some good advice here and thanks for the links to those two articles which i hadn't seen before.
as people have said here and in those articles, submssions to free and paid directories and article distribution will help get you some links, plus the time honored methods of looking for similar sites and asking for a link or recip.
a good free directory list is here
http://www.vmoptions.com/directory-l...?sort=datedesc
apparently google never shows you everything even in webmaster, at least that's what i've read in multiple places. yahoo backlinks is one of the better places to check s I think they have a complete inventory though you can actually see only the first 1000.
good luck.

You have the most important things and yet, you are focused on the second most useless "metric" possible. Why?

Absolutely no! If anything, the ones you see in there are quite possibly the ones that don't count for much.
