If I develop 20 quality backlinks for my website in a month's time, then what should be the number of IPs or the number of different sites they should be coming from? Thanks in advance.

What do the number of sites/IP's have to do with anything?

Since you posted in the advertising section of the forum, I'm going to assume the links are advertising. So, the only thing that matters is if, people click on those links. The number of sites/IP addresses is irrelevant.

But I want those backlinks to work towards my PR, rather than traffic. So if I have these 20 backlinks coming from just one forum, is it the same as 20 backlinks from different forums. If different is good, then how many? That's my question.

Then you should have posted in the Google forum since page rank is Google specific.

But I am talking about building links which is my main point. I was asking about the way I should do it. PR is a thing that comes along.

I even heard, that PR is calculated by Yahoo and MSN too. Then how is it Google Specific?

if you have all well established sites on different server then yes you can back link them together. If you do them all in the same range then you'll most likely get popped for link triangulation...

I am just talking about 1 website getting 20 backlinks from other sites which are not mine. But they would be in the form of forum or blog posts. So how should those 20 backlinks be? 20 from 4 sites, from 5 sites, from 10 sites or each from a different site? That's my question. Or all 20 from only one site. Does it matter?

Google Specific? because the term "Page Rank" is a trademark owned by Google. Because, Google has exclusive rights to the patent.

if you linked on forum it is consider to be backlink but it doesn't mean that you posted 20 times on one forum n that equals to 20 backlink it will consider only one link.

Well, the thing is, that's Google's proprietary knowledge. Anybody offering an opinion on is is doing just that, 'offering an opinion'.

OTOH, the way to get backlinks is to focus on people, not search engines. If you have good content, promote it. If people find it useful, they will naturally link to it. Those are the links that people click on. It's better to get traffic from a great many sources (notice panic in various forum posts when traffic evaporates with a change in search algorithm).

Don't worry, the search indexer will follow those links too.

Anywhere between 1 and 20 will be fine

BTW If you are concerned about the IPs when you are building links they are hardly going to be "quality" links
