Hi,

Is there any difference between nofollow and external nofollow?

I hear that generally we use nofollow for internal link in our sites (I dont want to follow by SEs bots) and external nofollow for external sites.

There are different values.

Kindly let me know because i use rel="nofollow" for some external sites in our sites, Should i change it to external nofollow?

Please suggest me.

Thanks

Put a "nofollow" value ONLY on links that you do not trust or endorse. It's as simple as that.

I would stick to using rel="nofollow" only, for both internal and external links. The Google help section comes up blank when searching for external nofollow.

Here's the section on nofollow from Google's Help center: http://www.google.com/support/webmas...n&answer=96569

They are the same I guess...Nofollow is nofollow...an unavoidable evil that exists as a result of the much more evil creatures called spammers.

But, Google has plenty of information about nofollow.

There is nothing evil at all about nofollow.
A strong argument could be made that those who worry about nofollow are the reason it exists.

CORRECT! Both are nofollow links. Both are treated the same by Google. The only difference is whether the page being linked to is opened in a new browser window or the same browser window.

The HTML 4.0 spec took away the target attribute but added rel. Though external is not one of the standard link types values defined by the w3c to be used with the rel attribute, it is a sort of defacto standard used on a lot of sites, blog themes, etc. to emarkup the link to indicate that it should be opened in a new window. This can be accomplished by creating a javascript function that runs as part of the onload event handler to access the browser dom and modify the links w/ rel="external *" so that they open in a new window.

Why is it that some people will happily accept and repeat absolutely ANY kind of halfa$$ed DRIVEL that some fool has made up and is passing around as fact

For goodness sake WAKE UP!!!!!!! and GET A CLUE!!!!!
Failing that I have a bridge I'm looking to sell (several times if I find enough gullible mugs!!)

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS rel="external" OR rel="external nofollow".

A. "external" is not a valid value for the rel attribute.
B. No major browsers use the rel attribute on anchor elements.
C. The only value that ALL browsers currently recognise is "stylesheet" when the attribute is applied to the <link> element.

NOW to save you all the obvious difficulty of having to actually test something, because I do realise just how difficult it must be to make a page with just the one link on it! Here is my page for you all to click the "external nofollow" link to see if it REALLY does open in a new window.
