hi everyone!

here's what i'm getting into. i wanted to run it by everyone to make sure there is nothing i'm missing or anything i haven't heard about.

we have an ecommerce site that ranks extremely well in our targeted keywords. however our domain name has 0 keywords in terms of what we are selling (its just the company name.com). the thought is if we get a more keyword focused domain, we can get ranked higher on a broader term for what we sell.

a dumb dumb language (example): lets say screwdrivers: we show up real high for "phillips screwdrivers" but are nowhere for just "screwdrivers."

using my example above, all the pages are already optimized for just the term "screwdrivers," but since it is a broader category, it is tougher to get ranked up higher.

so what i was thinking was...
buying a domain that is more keyword focused and use it as the domain for all of the catalogs/shopping cart system. leaving like the index page, help, and about us, and all our staic pages on www.companyname.com, and have links to www.keyworddomain.com for all our dynamically generated pages for which we want to generate more keyword intrest on that "broader" category. using the htaccess 301 redirect method from old domain links, to new domain links.

is there anything i'm missing?
what will google think about this?
does anyone think this has half a chance of working?
am i making any sense at all?!!

Thank you for any input ya'll might have!

I would be very careful with redirects, It can be one of the fastest ways of being droped from Google's index.

What search engine/s are you hoping the keyword rich domain will perform on?

mainly google. i've done my homework on the redirecting part... what i found is you can use 301 redirect in htaccess and that google interprets that as 'page permantly moved' and will update accordingly.

that sound right?

For Google having a keyword domain will only help a bit. What you need to do is name the site the same as the keyword domain which will alow you to submit to directories using your keywords as the title. Thus giving you strong anchor text links from strongly themed directories. This where a keyword rich domain out performs a normal one.

Yahoo loves keyword rich domains at present, you only have to look through the results to see this so make sure you get included.

does anyone see any negatives?... other than the time it will take for the new domain to get indexed.

i'm guessing it will at least get spyder'd quickly based on the fact google is hitting us daily.

noone seems to be too crazy about this idea. i've pretty much exausted all other options. all the meta/keyword/page content is all the way it should be. so much so that when our specific items are searched for, we are even on top of the manufacturer. but back in the "general term" area we are nowhere.

thoughts?

thanks!
