Build quality, relevant backlinks with that keyword in the anchor text. Also try to get them from sites with that keyword.

You should check out your competing sites. Sometimes spying on them can help you out in looking on how to get the edge or how to be on better position than them. You can research about them using tools like compete.com or whois.domaintools

You should check your competitor ranking and also check from where they are getting links. it's also important that how much you site internal linking is supporting that keyword. it also depends no high keyword competition. moving up will be hard if your competing with big and established site.

You should work out on building more relevant backlinks and do some analysis your competitor too for more output.

What counts most is the relevancy of back links that you are getting. And also with DoFollow sites. Google gives more value on those kinds of back links.

Try articles such as ezines and goarticles. If your site is a new site (eg less than 6-12 months old) then domain age could be a factor.

I agree! You'll have higher chances of getting into top positions if your getting quality of back links. When I say quality, it deals with relevancy. You can get quality of back links when engaging on the following techniques:

If you think you are in the sandbox, any advice on how to get out of it? I've been altering anchor text in new links - mixing it up more and also looking for higher ranking back links....any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.
