Google has added another option called "Blog" under "Show Options" category. This is a good option to narrow down our search I suppose !

I have no idea about that, on the first thought I think that is gonna be an advantage for blog owner but then again, if searchers don't know about that blog option in serps then they probably would be still surfing the normal way.

How do people think they categorize a site as blog? Through updates rates at the website, rss feeds or through more complex analytics?

Of course there are big difference between ordinary site, a blog, a forum, and many other types of websites. Google is dominant now on internet business surely, they know everything about websites, internet transactions, and many more.

As for the topic, Google just simple enriching the results and more options for searcher to look for what exact they are looking for within many categories of the topic.

It can be notice. Site and Blog has lots of differences.

1. Domain
2. RSS
3. Appearance
4. Layout

If you think about it, blogs have a lot of tell tale signs. When you visit a blog site you'll probably realise it's a blog as soon as the page opens - ask yourself how you know it's a blog, the chances are search engines will use some of the same logic.

If there's a text link of older post and latest post.

If the certain site also have an archive. You can easily determine that it is a blog.

This site has an "archive" Old Marketplace Forums Archives and again this site has

Obviously then, this is a "blog" not a forum!!!

A "blog" in the truest sense of the FULL name of web log would be a chronologically arranged sequence of events or occurences pertaining to an individual or entity. a diary in other words.

So what you normally term as "blogs" are simply a collection of categorised articles where the "blogging" software is being used as a content management system (CMS). Many "blogs" that allow comments on articles could also be termed "forums" (A place where discussions can be had by many interested or like minded individuals)

and EVERYTHING on the internet that is a collection individual pages is a website regardless of the use or purpose it is put to.
