If getting on the first page was the brief for the "job", then you have accomplished your task.
Not your fault your "boss" is so ill-informed.
Getting "first page" in Google results is very very easy, just get some links (quality doesn't matter) with some random phrase as the anchor text and there you are.
Getting real visitors and useful traffic for a specific phrase takes work and REAL knowledge, not following the usual junk "advice" dished out by "experts" on forums and blogs such as "do forum postings on dofollow sites" etc etc.

Yep "Educate your Boss" I totally agree.
Be careful though "Employers" can be very naive.
I lost my last SEO client because the guy could not be made to see that having links to directories in categories like /pakistani-gigolos-services and /indian-massage-mumbai was the reason I needed to improve their linking and why they we're stuck down on page 3 for "london removals" when I had improved their SEO better than those listed on Google above them.
I got them "easily" "small London Removals" with a nice new page and no dodgy listed anchor text backlinks but do you think I could convince the owner of the site this was the problem
Did I heck!
As ChrisHirst said "Educate your Boss" - but tread carefully.
