Directory submission helps bring in traffic but its just a slice of the pie.You got to do a combination of all of them-blogging, directory submission, nice and working sitemaps, bookmarking, forums and blog commenting.
Hey Ramirex care to tell me which directories you think brings you traffic apart from say DMOZ, Yahoo. The directories accounts for no more than 2% of Search Traffic.

I do agree.. I too don't think that much traffic will be coming from the directories. Don't know whether someone use directories in such a way. But many of the submissions for our sites had given strong backlinks and helped to get indexed quickly.

Any link to a new website from a Googlebot frequently crawled high PR domain will make the new site to be indexed quickly by Google. Most forums have high PR and using a signature link to point to a new site from one will help that site to be indexed quickly.

Directory Submission is help full for back links not for indexing.
Still I'm confused with it. I doubt whether directories give actual backlinks.

Yes, directory submissions will make Google to index your site very quickly. But if you really want to make this fast post on forums and once you have many posts (and many backlinks) Google will index your site very very fast.
Indexing will be done automatically. But you can help search engines to find your site by building backlinks. Mainly social bookmarking links helps to get quick index. But I havent heard directory submission helps site indexing.
I never believed that directory submissions can help us to at least index our pages soon. Many people says that it brings traffic. But its a sweet lie I think. It will never bring traffic.
Yesterday, we have added a dofollow business directory to our services ( Sorry chris as it didn't start as a stand alone one ). But just now i made a search to know whether the links in the directory or atleast the directory is indexed in google. But to my surprise it leads for that keyword . Previously this happened once when we started a blog and still we are on top for that keyword on google.
Our 'dofollow business directory' which started just before a day indexed soon and ranks top on google for the same keyword. I could see that there is no search for this keyword. But how this happened even without any seo?
My question is will it help the links of the directory too to be indexed soon. If so am glad..
Thanks for your time.
I always find it very interesting that people who have SEO links in there signatures ask questions that they should know the answers too... Amazing.
