I realize there are many ways to identify the long tail KW's. GA does a decent job of obviously telling you what kw's were used to find you but it doesn't give you very user friendly UI to analyze the long tail. (IMO)
60% of search comes from search terms you had no idea people would type in.
The point is to optimize for what people are actually typing in. The smaller your niche the shorter your tail. BASS Fishing is a small niche compared to others. I realize that "north carolina bass fishing" is a long tail kw etc.
There exist a FINITE amount of KW's and permutations of keywords in the bass fishing world of search. The search permutations are limited by the audience and the ability of the audience to create new searches. Search permutations will fluctuate, too, with the size of the audience over time.
There are tools that allow you to see these searches/permutations occurring in real-time in order to identify more common long tails. This is useful information when it comes to creating blog posts and site content. If 45 people searched for "bass fishing outboard motor for spring" then you'd quickly know to optimize for this since it apparently is a popular permutation of "bass fishing outboard motor".
It's important to know what your long tails are and to follow their use in real time in order to measure any long tail search trends or permutations you may have missed.
