I'm curious as to how one gets their sites categories to show in category format in Google.

Instead of

url.com/category/

it is shown as

url.com > Category

How do you show Google your categories?

Search that for example, you can see where the URL is displayed that theres a category format.

I'm assuming that since you aren't sure of what I'm speaking of that you don't know.

It's just a display "thing" that Google have been doing since around June (2009) it appeared at the same time they started showing centre truncated URLs as well.

So this could appear in the SERPs as well

Does anyone know how Google reads it?

It's an extension of the "site links" GUI feature

Sorry, I couldn't resist. It's automated by the almighty Google much in the way "sitelinks" are...I believe.

No hard answers here, but from my conclusion it is from breadcrumbs on the page itself. I assume it must follow the format on the entire site for Google to understand it.

E.G

Site Home > Site Category > Site Page

You're probably right.

Categories allow you to group related sites and make them accessible together within the popular categories list.
