I have recently been targeting a certain keyword, the number of backlinks to the page I have been promoting increased in web mas tools but it has dropped back a page in the serps I would have thought it would have improved not gone backwards, Im hoping this is tempory any ideas guys

is calculated by way of google, most do not currently backlink comes from a page, if you put on a site, backlink is of course reduced.

If you put on multiple pages, check your link, may have nofollow.
Otherwise it will be back shortly.

Firstly, backlinks from sites not related to your niche will not help you much to get better SERPs ranking it only helps you to get better PR.
And secondly backlinks is not the only factor that determines your SERPs ranking , try to optimize your site from other angles also.

This ive noticed on several of my sites of late also, i guess some sites so actually disappear / people forget to pay their hosting bills, i guess if they don't care for their site than maybe we shouldn't have links there.

SERPs depend on several factors, not only from amount of backlinks.

Other factors include the anchor text of your backlinks, the strength of those backlinks (dofollow & PR of linking pages, amount of outgoing links on those pages, the place of your link in those pages,...), the SE optimization of your own page,...

And, as stated in previous answers, also the same factors for your competitors (including optimization of their own pages).

Changes may also come from google: either temporarily (you got SERPs from another data center) or not (real change of algorithm).

Competitor - Possible to happen especially if you're targeting a pretty interesting keyword

Google dance - They say it usually happen from time to time, but this doesn't really affect your site that much

Google penalty - very possible, since you're concentrating to certain keyword; maybe Google sees that you stuffed too much keyword into your site.

There are many factors involved, not just backlinks.

If you are not doing backlink at very large scale (more than 50,000 in a short time), it is not likely that Google punishes you.

google has made it had for webmaster to rank, keep building links, remember good quality links. You will get back tot he spot you want

There is something called Google dance..This may be one of the reasons or may be any of your competitor is also working on the same in a better manner than you.

I think the back links you gain is not that good also google update regular...don't rely on what you are doing everyday always make a research and read on google's update.

There is NOTHING called "The Google Dance"

As some other people have said, there could be a lot of different reasons that you dropped.

I think you may have got penalized for something, but I can't say for certain without knowing exactly what you did, etc.

Just work on slowly building high quality relevant back links to your site.
