It's no big news, actually even before it became official. Every forum and blog I go to has to make a post on several weeks ago, and yet these post still come up.
I read that speed has always been considered a rank factor. I remember reading back in 2001 that you should keep every .html page under 15K, so that google would index your pages faster. Back in the day! Now file sizes are bigger, but google still wants improve the web. To evolve to a more user friendly, easy to access and navigate informational guide.
I am glad that google has done this, because now webmasters will be forced to reconsider much of their work, and think about the users a little more .
