Just had a long chat with one of my clients, the title of the chat was: Now im 1st on Google and i make no money.

All SEO guys are fighting to bring their sites to 1st position on Google, but still, you can see your site on top and make no money, why ?

1. Bad website design
2. No attractive landing pages
3. Wrong conversion efforts
4. No specific product /service
5. No call to action

Conslusion:
Now im 1st on Google - great, that's step 1. Step 2 is to make money from it.

You are first on google for what phrase? yourdomainname.com? I am first on google for mydomainname.com too, but only 1200 visitors/day search for that.

If you are "first" for a phrase nobody is looking for you may as well be 999th for one that everybody is.

Just because YOU can see the page at "No 1" does NOT mean any one else can.

The only way to tell if your site is truely #1 is by monitoring it in the google webmaster tools.
That tells you your average placement.

The chances are, your site ISNT appearing #1 every time.
Google tailors the results for every user. So its different each time.

I'm number 1 for "baby panda pate" gonna be rich I tell you, rich beyond my wildest dreams, just need to get liquidised rabbit into that number 1 spot

sometimes the problem would be the title and the details shown in the serp, its not that catchy that users didn't attract to see or check on your site.

Yes, i agree.I'm working on a project right now with a client.He wants to grab the first page with his keywords.The bad thing is,he doesn't want to change his old site.not even the contents or title,He just want me to work on my seo stuff.Finally i was able to explained everything that he needs to redesign his website and hire a good web designer.I think good website design counts and attracts visitors to trust your and buy your product.

But it is true. Many webmasters strives to get to #1. When they get there, they dont do anything to get the site to convert....

I agree that it takes more than ranking first page in Google to be able to see increase in sales.Hire the best web designer to have an SEO friendly website and a good landing page for a great conversion rate.

If you are on first position and not making money, then it could be that you have not done keyword research proper.

It is important to have top Google ranks for some high quality terms, the ones which would help the sites getting monetized in the future. In most cases, even after registering domain names and launching websites, their names would be actually the first ones getting displayed on top of Google but does this mean their ranks for the keywords targeted are also great? Probably not.

Unfortunately the content and title IS the "SEO stuff"

every thing else is marketing and promotion!!

I'm doing a good site at the moment, the customer wants to be on first page for terms he hasn't got on his website, he doesn't want to change his website though Another one wants his flash site on first page for a load of stuff <cue> mission impossible music </cue>

I also first position for my keyword in domain name however the big challenge is move from 2nd position to 1st position for one of my important keyword. At 1st is Wikipedia and 2nd is me. Trying hard to come on 1st but cant able to beat Wikipedia.

Any inputs?

Google always emphasis user experience, I've been to site on the first spot. Soon as I click on the link, the site take ages to load so I just click the 'x' button and move on the next site.

Some web design or perhaps the wish of their client, loads tons of graphics, flash and video thinking that gives good user experience but I think otherwise.

Simple, clean and straight to the point of what you're selling give good user experience - just my two cents

Probably 50 percent of sites I google now I just go to googles cached page, google has really sped up it's servers now over the last few years and generally will serve the content quicker, as for flash and rubbish like that, it should all be banned

I agree with what Chris said, SEO is making sure the content is correct etc.

Everything else off site is just marketing !

In fact many webmasters want to get to number 1, doing the same thing, not wanting to change any content etc !
