Currently my site has a domain name related to one of my products,

I am placing very well in searches

I have expanded my product line and I would like to add a domain name (something less product specific) but don't want to loose my current placement.

If I do a redirect from some pages to the new domain, will it eventually replace the old domain, in search results? (if identical site)

Or is there a way of advising the SE's to re direct

I have worked hard to get this site where it is in the SE's, and don't want to loose out.

Thanks for any advise

Scott

Why not just redirect your new domain to your old one?

I don't know if there is an answer to this.

In theory I would say yes in time it will result in same but many things determine. The name itself can have a huge impact on placement. If your product isn't in your name now but it will be. You will probably be best off changing. If your product is currently in your name and the new one will not, then I would say hold off.

Really you need to ask, Is this worth possibly losing my spot?

The type of redirect is very important. It must be a 301 Perminant Redirect using .htaccess. Redirects using javascript won't work for search engine spiders and using meta refresh could be mistook for cloaking. Also, don't use dns domain parking or addon domains as google treats them as two separate sites with identical content.

There is also a 300 Temporary Redirect. Be wary of this. business.com got that one wrong and google penalised them for it.

If you use a 301 redirect, googlebot treats both domains as the same page/site and so they both get the same PR. It is also a good idea to redirect your www to your domain (e.g. redirect www.domain.com to domain.com or vice versa) as otherwise you could have 2 lots of PR. One lot for the domain with www and another lot for the domain without. By doing a redirect you can combine the two together.

What about the reported problem with Yahoo and 301 redirects? Has that been resolved?
