Thought for today:- Is SEO the only industry where all the cowboys are Indians?
Blogs are like other types of websites and by addition of contents plus links, some decent rankings would be gained but SEO is nothing to be done within a few days or even weeks because some months of work might be needed sometimes, especially when it comes to promoting new websites which many believe could be in the Sandbox effect for some time. Blogs can be great since they are in most cases get indexed very quickly.

Target your blog keywords promptly. Promote your blog. Join forums related to your blog niche; make a facebook and twitter account for it and ask you blog visitors to like / follow you there.
Promote it by building links...Do some keyword research prior to that and look for keywords that are not much competitive...Promote using those keywords..
Start with some basic SEO -article submissions, directory submissions, blog commenting, forum posting etc. Keep building quality backlinks but do it at a slow pace so that google feels it is natural.

Create a blog post daily and bookmark it.Make sure the content is unique,try to get backlinks from other blogs of your niche.Submit some article related to your blog in some high pr article directories(make sure to add a link back to your blog).

what's your blog? you got your own domain name or just use free blog provider. If you are using free blog provider like blogger and wordpress.com, forgot it, you site will never on the google first page, because google will put your blog under blog search.

Well... this is a nice question! I have some blogs and I could manage to get top Google for many queries. I have been making regular posts in there and use the targeted keyword if possible in all the posts as many time as it comes naturally. Try not to impose keywords by force. Permalink of each post has its very own significance; so draft your title in planned way with your keyword at least once in the title. Bookmark every single post. Right kind of directory submissions, commenting in relevant blog posts, forum posting, are necessary. RSS feed submission really helps.
