What will happen then you think?

Does it mean Microsoft will adopt PageRank in its search calculations?

Aparently the license is owned by Stanford University, not Google.

I suspect that over at Bing they are already dissecting the algorithm components and defining how they plan to apply something similar. The interesting question is whether that would lead to more similar rankings, given that links seem to count for less in the Bing algo.

The other big search companies already have their own methods of "ranking" sites so they're probably using many of the same sort of algorithms that Google do. Obviously given a licence to do so they may or may not add something that's currently protected by the patent come 2011.

I'm sure that most SE companies have similar alorythms but Google's "special secret sauce" of around 200 individual factors is what makes it's search results (arguably) the best.

I am assuming that Stanford owns the patent because the research was done by Brin and Page when they were graduate students using the university's resources there, and before the company was incorporated.
sidebar: for an interesting read on the background of Google's success, get a copy of "The Search" by John Battelle

As to whether or not Google can extend the exclusive license, I'm not really sure how these things work. There might be some US ant-trust regulations against that. Maybe some legal eagles here will know.

Because The actual page rank algorithm was developed by Google's founders Larry page and Sergery Brin at stanford university. That's why it's called Google PR.

Well, since PR is becoming less important day by day and in the Google world, so I think it will become obsolete and not used by other search engines.

I think Google always use pagerank or something like it for ranking results. And pagerank is owned by Google no stanford university.

Look at the Assignee, THAT is the patent owner.

This is normal practice, if you are in paid employment for a company and develop something that can be patented: the company owns it.

If you are a University student the University owns it.

You are just the inventor, the people who fund or provide the resource for the research become the owners.

Nope, what it means is that the methods, ideas and claims described in the patent can be used by other parties without requiring a licence.

The name PageRank however is trademarked to Google (filed in 2003)

What Chrishirst said...

And almost all search engines have something very similar to page rank for measuring link popularity in their algorithm. They just can't call it that and do it slightly differently in each case. So I'm not seeing why any of that would change.
