There are a lot of great ways to pick up links...and many of them are easier than reciprocal link building and result in much higher quality links...
1.) Write great content. This may sound overly simple, but it really works. Great sites with great (original) content attract links simply by being worth linking to. It's sort of a self-feeding cycle...as you get links and your ranking improves, more people find you, think you are worth linking to, which helps increase your rankings...well...you get the idea.
2.) Syndicate. Offer an RSS feed, or reprints of your articles. This is a great way to provide content to other sites, build up your own reputation and get some incoming links while you are at it.
3.) Hit the directories. There are TONS of directories...granted, only a dozen or so really get that that much traffic, but some, like the ODP, are syndicated. That means that other sites can run their data...so a link from the ODP could result in dozens of links from sites that run ODP data. Plus, directories are usually well spidered and are a great way to help get your site in the engines quickly.
There are tons of other ways to go about getting links...stick around and I'm sure our other members will be happy to share some more tips with you.
