Since around a year, I have setup my website. After reading all the possible advice available on the dos and the don’ts, my website PR is still at 0. To get a PR of 1 also, I am really frustrated and I am willing to do whatever needs to be done. While it is many pages down, this site has been indexed by Google and it reflects really well in the results too. There has been no rise in the PR while the site is clean (W3C compliant), it has been listed in some directories and forums and has a few backlinks too. What is your take?

The few backlinks are the reason why you don't get a higher PR. For high PR, you need quality relevant backlinks!

( as above )

PR is handed down from other trusted sites..

for example.
Lets say MSN.com is PR9

If they link to you, They will hand parts of the PR to your site..

So the more High PR sites link back to you, the higher your PR will get.

Don't just get a backlinks from other site. Get a backlink from sites with higher PR than yours to gain PR.

Not that SGB PR matters in the slightest.

Really you all should get over your obsession with something so useless!

I don't focus so much on PR. I focus on getting links to places that I am likely to get visitors from. I have a website that people have been posting links to on forums and in blogs. It can be a big help if you get others to post some links for you like this. Also, look into article writing and submit to websites like articlebase.com. If people repost your articles you will get a lot of links. One article might get you several links.

I have to agree with you but I guess it all depends on what role your website plays. If it's selling a product then PR may be good, but I see A LOT of people looking at just the PR for sites that generate revenue through ads. With that, PR seems to be more for bragging rights. Alexa rating is what determines the websites financial value and what advertisers look at.
