I am trying to get rid of irrelevant mutual links.
Because I am optimizing my site for "wooden toys". I have some questions about what kind of link and information would be considered relevant to my site.

Does relevant mean the link text must appear somewhere in your site?
For instance, my site copy has info about wooden toys. I know a wooden toy link would be ideal. Would a site that is about woodworking, carpentry or furniture be considered relevant? I feel that people who are into wood toys may be interested in wood working related sites also.

I guess what I am asking is, does "quality" link copy have to match the content in your site or can they match the "theme" of your site?

"relevant" links are for humans NOT search engines.

Do not consider links for search engines, consider and get links for the traffic they can send, for the sales they can bring, for the ADVERTISING potential.

Some links may get you "rankings", BUT ONLY for a single phrase, what if that phrase DOESN'T be the cash cow you assume it will be?
Your time and effort is wasted, getting links for rankings is like chasing the wind. Look for something tangible, something measurable. Link counting is not a useful metric, are A Poor Measure Of Success

Are you talking about only reciprocal links?

Relevant links are always preferred by Google. But it doesn't mean that Google doesn't consider other links. If you build links from any furniture or kids shop kind of site, they will be considered by Google.

That is true for sites that are directly related to music. Will google penalize you for linking to indirectly related sites like audio equipment, producers and promoters? Music visitors may be interested in those but will google?

Do PEOPLE who buy or drive automobiles not like music?

If you follow politics do you not like music??

it should be 100% relevant, if your site is about airplane it should link to airplane only.

I apologize for being a noob. Im just trying to get a solid understanding
of exactly what does relevant mean. Are relevant links restricted to the actual written content of a website? That would mean an airplane site could not link to a site that makes aviator caps? It seems like that link would benefit a visitor, unlike a link for rubber even though plane tires are made of rubber.

I do think linkback from relevant website or directoires is good for our website rank. the relevant sites would includes many types.like you are managing a clothing store,you can link exchange with pants store, and you can also link with other categories like shoes, boots,sunglasses.not all must be clothing...
