Both are equally important as on one side it keep your site update and on the other it bring backlinks to your site.

Both are important but adding fresh content to your site is more important.

both is necessary, beacause with article submisiion you will get traffic which will never come again, and if you add new content then even if you a one loyal visitor he will come back again and again

I get the most traffic from article submissions, but of course updating content regularly is very essential so google will appreciate your site and to keep the visitors happy for always getting fresh materials, so I do both.

Adding new contents or articles for your site is much better than just giving away your articles to different article directories.

I prefer doing both which will benefit SEO.
