So has anyone taken up keywords that have millions of returned results in google? Are you surviving or was it more of a crash and burn?

I am launching a new site in the next week or two, which has huge potential, but it will be a miracle to be ranked on the top 10 pages, much less the top 10.

Yes, actually the website gift for men website in my link has thousands of searches every month. The problem is that I realize that I won't be ranking for that term for years mate. However, I'm a pro and I know what I'm doing.

You see my aquisition of gift-for-men.com was quite brilliant if you understand what an authority domain is. Let me explain, if you did a search for About Chocolate chances are that a page from about.com is going to appear. That's because About.com has authority over the phrase About.

Since, there are THOUSANDS of phrases being searched with the term "Gift for Men" hopefully I can gain authority over time and be able to rank any webpage with that term in it.

Since my website is relatively knew I'm only targetting keywords with 0-100 searches every month. As I build my website up I'm starting to see alot more traffic and referrals.

Ultimately I'll get it. I know what I'm doing. I just need to build backlinks/ content.

This is not your problem alone actually as thousands of webmasters are going to face the challenges of discovering how their sites could possibly cope with the stronger and ones ones. One of the best recommendations in such cases is sticking with the less competitive terms policy which means totally forgetting about the primary words for some time, like months, because the less competitive terms can bring faster results to your site.

You mean just like the Adobe Reader download page is an "authority" for "click here"???

try to see if the top 10 are targeting those keywords for real analyzing their backlinks , also if they are targeting them on title and metatag.

search it again on exact match and you will see the correct aprox searched / month on google.

I've looked at keywords and it shows searches and competition, but I am confused, because even the ones with low competition still show millions of results. Is this because google throws in tons of related searches as well, but if you are specifically targeting those keywords, you'll appear ahead of all of the rest?

I'm kind of a newbie, but this approach has worked for me so far.

I don't count the number of results that are returned for a "keyword" search on Google.(I'm referring to a regular Google search, NOT the keyword tool-this is how I rate my competition)

I just Google the keyword (without "quotes") and look at the competition on the first 2 pages.

Even if there's a large amount of results for a keyword search with quotes, it doesn't mean that all those sites are optimized for that keyword. And many sites are just junk.

Are you referring to the competition bar in the adwords keyword tool?

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the competition bar next to the monthly searches refers to the amount of competition that an ADVERTISER might expect while bidding on a specific search term.

I've always had the same question, because the competition bar never jives with the amount of actual competition from a webmasters point of view.

Glad you brought this up.

if your content is very fresh, and not to copy, and the keywords is not very big huge, the ranking is very hard.

Yes richarie, you are very fortunate not to have to worry about Google all the time.

Thanks for reminding us that Google is not everything (Chris also).

I must admit that lately I'm starting to feel a little bit like Googles bit*h.
