Google analytics, traffic sources

Curious, when google analytics shows traffic sources, does it count users based on history? For example, if someone used google to find my site 3 weeks ago and they use my site again, but from a bookmark, does analytics count that today as a source from the google each day?

My numbers appear that way, which sucks, because I want to know how many new users are coming in from google, not the number that visit that originally found me via google.

Google uses several cookies. If you are using Chrome, go to Options > Under the hood > Content settings > cookies. Then select the site you want to check. For example Tycoontalk use UTMA, UTMB, UTMC, UTMV, UTMZ cookies.

UTMA is a persistent cookie. So in your subsequent visits, GA sees you as a returning visitor.

UTMB is a session identifier and it's a temporary cookie. It expires after 30 minutes.

UTMC is again a session identifier and it's a temporary cookie. It expires as soon as you close the browser / browser tab.

UTMZ carries campaign values. my Tycoontalk UTMZ cookie says that I came from Google Organic results.

UTMV cookie is for visitor segmentation. My tycoontalk cookie says that I'm a registered user.

So unless you tweaked your GA or that user didn't clear the browser cache, the answer to your question is, nope. even if somebody bookmarked your site or not, that visitor will be a returning visitor.

Believe me, GA gives you pretty solid traffic results in almost any 'normal' condition. There are occasions where GA screws up traffic for you. But no other analytics solution has the same sort of reach and utility for free.

There is a simple way you can see how many new visitors came in from Google using Google Analytics. Follow these steps after reaching your Dashboard

1. Go to visitors in the left column menu of your Analytics
2. Select "New vs Returning"
3. In the details, select "New Visitor"
4. Below the site usage you will find a dropdown which shows "None" by default. Click this and select "Source" from the options you get.
5. This will display new visitors by source including from Google.

Hope this helps.

In my SEO Experience the best traffic report tools is Google Analytic only. You can find the new users in the Visitors >> Absolute Unique Visitors.
