3 years. But sometimes 3 months.

That needs consistent efforts and regular monitoring to the keyword ranking atleast can say from 3-6 months is SEO is regular and effective.

If it takes you between 3 months and 3 years to get to page 1 of Google I suggest you are doing something wrong, especially as you are the President of a "boutique website and custom software development company".
I have never paid anyone money to get me on to page 1 of Google, because I believe most of the people who do this for a living are a waste of time and money. Yet I have achieved this amazing feat many times, mostly by hard work, creating blogs, writing good content into my website etc.
At the moment I have about 7 different types of product on my website, and 5 of them are on page 1 of Google.
The shortest time it has taken to reach page 1 was less than a week, when I created a Squidoo lens about one of my products, about 2 years ago.
Reaching page 1 is not about giving someone money to cast a magic spell, it is about being creative, and working hard.

Actually it all depends upon your work.which type of SEO work you are implementing.if you are going in wrong direction then you are ok with 3 years.So always try to do creative work in your link building and try to get results ASAP.

it could be instant if there is zero competition for the term, or it's your unique company name, for example.

It totally depends on the terms you're targeting. Trying to get to the top for something like the term "architects" is going to take serious amounts of effort, incredible content, and a lot of time. but getting to the top for, say, "architects in st james road, putney" might take only a couple of weeks.

it may take forever especially if youre not good at it. but usually 3months is enough

where are you both getting that 3 month figure from? On what is that based?

It takes much time and patience..
Some tips for you:
- Insert keywords at right place on your meta tags.

- Name your Images with Descriptive Titles and alt text.

- Use relevant text on your website.

- Use Ad sense to assess overall content relevance.

- Optimize Your Title and Meta tags.

Definitely not a pun as a "pun" is a "play on words" (deliberately confusing the meaning of similar sounding words) much loved by newspaper copywriters and hair salons/stylists

images do not have "titles", there is a title attribute, which if you actually READ MORE rather than shill posting you would KNOW that they are NOT used by search engines

Meta "tags" have absolutely no bearing on "ranking" and the above paragraph also applies.

NOW! If all you can add to a thread is inaccurate information I would suggest that adding NOTHING would be a wise course of action!!

almost all seo contest i knew last only for three months. where else should they base who wins but the pages in the first page.

no assurance, for me it usually takes 1-3 months... I got lucky sometimes it only takes a week or so after doing on page but it really depends on the keywords and competition...

It took four month for me to get in top ten position for one low competition keyword. Currently working for an high compete keywords from last six months. But not yet reached in top ten.

You may never get to page 1 of google because those on page 1 are smart enough to stay head of you. If you are a local business then try Google Places as that will give you a chance based on your location.

Years. If you get there too soon it is unlikely to last. Google makes you work for it and so you just have to adopt a drip drip approach of doing things little and often.

It depends on competitiveness of your keywords and amount of quality backlinks those keywords have.

Nope, Only the links that Google decides to use and allow the anchor text to be an influence in promoting the page up the ranking.

Appropriate optimization and Off site SEO methods can be effective and should have quality in work to get good Google results.
