I am pretty sure that Google defines duplicate content internally and not on the whole www, i.e. it hurts to have many pages that are identical on one site.
However, does it hurt to post articles found somewhere on ones own website?
I am asking because I have written many articles regarding chinese language schools and I now want to post them on my website (I have previously posted them elsewhere - such as ezinearticles.com amongst others) - but I don't want to drag my website down. I dont really care about going higher, I don't think they will accomplish that - but what I do care about is not falling down!
To use a Matt Cutts phrase - Am I stupid in the head? What do you think about the effect of content that exists elsewhere?

try it and find out. Bear in mind, there is no penalty for duplicate content, just that Google will only normally display 1 instance in the SERPs. So the worst that will happen is that the version on ezinearticles.com might be displayed instead because that version will appear to be the main source, given it's been up there longer.
That said, Google just clobbered article websites, ezinearticles included, and does not favour them any more. I would have thought that Google would totally approve of you moving the content back to your own site.
I'd love to hear how it works out. Give it a go and let us know!

Thanks for your speedy reply!
Cool. I will go ahead and report back.
Silly question Mr. Supermoderator, if I may: What does Google love now?
and also, as a side point - the articles would make my website around 100 pages bigger - will that have a positive effect (if nothing else, it will create more internal links right?)

Note on moving your content.....
Once content is posted it never goes away...it exists on a server somewhere...
But ....I do not know how far or deep Google will go to find duplicate content...

No problem.
Google loves good, quality content relevant to your niche. They seem to really like Social Media Marketing these days too, with Matt Cutts recommending it as one of the top three promotional focuses for 2011.
More content on your site is always a good thing - think of it from a surfer's perspective: the more informative a site the better.

This is a very good point. I did see the guys at Google are trying to figure out the best way of figuring out the actual source of a document - which would help in a situation like this for sure.

Since you don't want to down your fomer sites so you can't delete the contents, under this condition, ping back will be a good choice.

Yeah. Pinging back will help your site to announce in search engines that you are done updating your site.

No! and No!
The ONLY thing you need to care about is providing a good site for your users.
Spreading your work far and wide for others to steal freely use (and scratch a few adsense pennies off) is counter-productive to that end.
Why should anyone some to your site (and possibly your adverts) when they have already read your article?????

I'm writing online and published it elsewhere, but I have a copy on my personal blog. When I republished it elsewhere, I changed the Title and doing some alterations on the body. It's been 2 months now, and working alright. There are some sites that accepts republished articles and links too. But, maintain the adsense of your blog by following their TOS.

The "panda" update was not about duplicate content. It was targeting and removing JUNK content.
The regurgitated "content spinner" garbage that clueless clowns calling themselves "SEO"s insit on reusing.
If your pages got "hit by Panda" it's your own fault for listening to fools who proclaim themselves as "expert"

Hello Forum!
edgray asked me to report back:
Today it is a month since I posted all the articles I wrote on my site (98) and I have not detected any downward momentum as of yet, if anything I have risen a bit - but it is impossible to tell what the reason for that is as I have been doing a lot of other stuff with the site during that time.
What I can tell is that posting all those articles elsewhere had a negligible effect upwards in the past, though it did bring some traffic. Overall, however, I think that the work I put into articles was not worth it.

On a side note, Google is amazing - what they do is much closer to a public service usually provided by governments than a corporation.
To make all the worlds information accessible, that must be on par with building highway system or some other crucial utility. I can even imagine how my work day would look without it, which is how I bet people felt about speedy multi-lane travel in 30's-40's.
I love the Panda. Long live G.

And did that traffic perform any useful function towards converting? Or simply arrive and leave.

Well that's positive, Chris. Having the content back on your own site with no negative effect means it's only onwards and upwards from here
