Hello eveyone

I have a quick question. I am currently building my first website and ultimately wish to get listed in google, etc. However, I have heard this may take several months.

Therefore, is it advisable to submit whilst still designing the site or will it be better to wait until it is complete ?

thanks

Padawan

if you get link backs from sites that are already indexed by google then you become listed quicker ( i think)

I would wait until the site is finished. Many SE's look for content as well as links. It is a good idea to find some backlinks to help you get listed.

You actually do not even need to submit your site. Google will find it anyway. But many people find it comforting to know that it is submitted and waiting to be indexed.

Good luck

While you design your site, put a text that represent your web content, and go ask exchange link from other site that has been indexed by google.
You can see your pagerank's google bar becoming white (not grey) when google has indexed your site.
any other opinion?

personally id start building backlinks up now, and i wouldn't worry about submitting. i dont see the harm in having google start to crawl your site now. google won't crawl your site to in depth since it is new, and getting it to crawl sooner i feel would encourage it to crawl deeper in depth sooner.

Ok, thanks for all the replies so far - certainly some useful information there.

In response to building links up now, are there actually people out there willing to trade / give links to a new, unlisted site that is not yet fully complete ??

Padawan, I'm not sure how many sites will link to your before it is complete, but it's worth a try. Also like suggested above, I would not submit an incomplete site to the SE's. I would finish it, get backlinks and submit. The backlinks of urls in Google will certainly get you listed faster.

Also what veedee means by "You can see your pagerank's google bar becoming white (not grey) when google has indexed your site.", is that if you have the Google toolbar and visit your own site. The ranking bar will be white if your site is indexed (but the PR will be 0 out of 10 until the next update), but if it is gray and the rollover says "No page rank information available" (or something to the sort), then your site has yet to be indexed.

sites may not want to link with an imcomplete site, but thats not to say you can't put a link in your forum signatures, and start building backlinks.

Sorry if this is going against the general consensus, but I wouldnt build any backlinks until you have a healthy amount of content. Reason being is that google's crawlers will find your site pretty quick once you get a few quality links. When they hit your site, it will be full of errors, not working links, no content, just overall incomplete.

Google will index those ****ty pages and may not come back for a decent amount of time.
By the time your site is actually finished, it may take another month before google will revisit your site.

I am just speaking from personal experience, its kinda risky either way though.

Like everyone eles has said, dont submit to google until you finish your website. Even after that get some links and you will be found!

In order to get listed in google, your website should be optimized. First, You should optimize your website. You should have more pages having good content. And these pages should have enough internal & external links. You can go for link exchange. The keywords should be repeated in content.

When you say "these pages should have enough internal & external links" I obviously understand internal links, but what do you mean by external links ?

should I be linking out to other sites of interest from every page ?

Well just to go against the popular opinion here a bit...

I wouldn't recommend submitting your site to google when you just start creating it, but I would recommend submitting it after you have some decent content, even if it isn't quite finished yet. (as long as you don't mind end users seeing an unfinished site)

The reason is that Google will come around and index your site more often if your content is changing more. If a site changes its contents daily Google will try to index it daily. If a site changes its contents every few months, google learns and anticipates this so comes back much more infrequently.

Of course this is all speculation since google doesn't officially give you its indexing methodologies.
