Google never lists all of the backlinks. Only what they consider important. For example I have from between 3000 to 6000 for the major SE's, but Google only lists 288 of them. It's just how it is.

Is there any way that you can write a link back which will enhance your chances of google picking them up. I also note that many of the links of the top performing site are links from one of their own pages to another. am I missing something here

It's not that Google hasent picked up all your backlinks, it's just that G wont show them in the results. The links that arent showing are still being weighed in your favor as links.

Take Care!

Thanks
How do you need to write an internal link in order for google to pick it up, one of my competitors with a very high google ranking and lots of google accepted links which are all internal to thwe site from pages with one product to another. I write my links as follows
<a href="http://www.clipperlight.com"><img src="../buttons/NONEUK.gif" alt="home button"></a> is there a better way of writing this link
Help please
Regards

As far as I know google will pick up your internal links if you do them like that, as I have done them myself that way. There may be a more effecient way that someone is aware of though...

I know Google doesn't display all the backlinks to your pages, but still weighs them in your favour. Does anyone know the best method to find all backlinks though? I think they show links with a PR of 3 or greater but I'm not sure what the exact PR has to be before they show the incoming link.

Is there a search engine that shows more backlinks than google?

What I find extraordinary is that some of my competitors have the same backlink with the same site as me, but theirs are shown and mine are not. and in some cases all the backlinks shown are realy internal links between the pages of their own site. I have links with bonifide good site which are not shown.

Google will only show a small selection, clipper, you will probable find that your competitors have a lot more link than the ones that are showing. They intend the backlinks to be dececptive, if you know exactly what they count it would help you optimise. At one point they did not show links with PR more than 4, then they starting only showing link with PR less than 4, now it anyones guess.

The google algorithm for backlinks has certainly undergone a change over the last 1/4. The notion of showing of backlinks only over a certain PR is dubious at best.

Take this search for example: "link:http://www.webdevforums.com/ -site:webdevforums.com"

Webdevforums enjoys a PR7, now they certainly dont get a PR like that without some very substantial external links from PR8-10 sites. However the results page for the above search string returns a single result from an unranked webpage.

These kind of results are widespread and I consider it an algorithm bug.
