Google wouldn't--recently, Google updated its policy on ALT text, and it now only counts alt text in images that are hyperlinked towards your site's relevance. In other words, if your image tag is simply there for show and doesn't link to anything, it is invisible to Google.
Unfortunately, this has had a big (negative) impact on a few of my websites, but it just goes to show the importance of text over rich content in Google's rankings!
