As someone who is quite inexperienced with web design and still very much learning I have just come across the concept of ALT tags which I believe I now understand fairly well.

However, my question is, on one page of my site I have around 36 images that I could quite legitimately add the same keyword to in the tag - would google and other search engines deem this to be keyword spamming or would it be of some benefit to me ?

Google wouldn't--recently, Google updated its policy on ALT text, and it now only counts alt text in images that are hyperlinked towards your site's relevance. In other words, if your image tag is simply there for show and doesn't link to anything, it is invisible to Google.

Unfortunately, this has had a big (negative) impact on a few of my websites, but it just goes to show the importance of text over rich content in Google's rankings!
