i was looking around and found some places that you sign up to and they submit your site to the engines for you?

are these any good? if so, which would you recommend?

They all are FFA. Don't participate in link schemes designed to increase your site's ranking or Page Rank.

Also if you read google guidelines you wil see that they prefer avoiding automated things like that.

These programs don't work. The only way to get a good search engine ranking is to have good content and lots of incoming links.

Honestly, search engine submission programs are a complete rip off. It's 2005. You don't need to submit you url to search engines. Get good links. Build a high quality, content-rich site that other people find useful enough to link to. The search engines will find your site through those links.

You can't really submit to search engines nowadays unless you pay them for express inclusion. You can only submit to directories and there are just too many directories to keep up with.
