Hello,

'Nother newbie question for you...

I see talk of page rank and see things like PR0, PR6, etc.

How do I find the PR of my site?

What does the #'s represent?

I also saw talk that a new site won't get a PR until after a length of time. Is this correct? If so how long does it take to get a PR.

Thanks.

That is true, as far as the google toolbar PR is concerned. This is only updated every few months or so now, with the last update being a few weeks ago. Whilst this means you have a long wait before you will see any PR for your site, it also gives you ample time to start building backlinks which is how you boost your page rank.

As for the numbers, PR ranges from PR0 to PR10. The higher number the PR of a page, the more backlinks there are pointing to it. To increase your PR takes an exponential number of links, ie to get from PR4 to 5 will be a lot harder than going from PR0 to 4.

Padawan,

The explanation you gave was not what I thought it was, so your reply was very appreciated and helpful.

Thanks a lot for the clarification.

Hi again,

Its true to say that backlinks will boost your PR. Links from related sites will give you a real boost over time. However, dont be to worried about PR. This will come in time anyway as your website expands - good content with links to it is better than anything else.

As for the PR shown on the google toolbar, it is always out of date even after google adjust it. Its like looking at a star in the sky, it may have burnt out years ago, what you now see is not what is there!. Google PR is like this, the toolbar doesnt help much, the google algo may treat you as a Page Rank 7 in the search results but show you as a 5, often your position in the Google Directory can give you a better idea of how important you are to Google but dont forget, pages with zero PR can still rank 1 in the Google SERPs if they have good content, titles and are set out well.

Good Luck

RichTC,

Thanks for the reply. I know what you mean about ranking well with little or no PR. I have a unique but very specific keyword where I'm #1 at Yahoo... and not so fair at Google. LOL!

Thanks,
