Even www.google.com is showing a grey toolbar. McDar and SEO rank lookup is dead. There is currently NO pr for ANY site on the web. Is this the end of PR?

I've noticed this too. Either it will remain dead, or it is being re-configured? Who knows.

That's very good. Now people will not speculate on PR and will not sell overpriced text links. Also it will be much easier to exchange links with possibly lower ranked sites. Since PR became very easy to achieve it lost its real value. Alexa Rank - that's the one thar really is valueable. Get Firefox, install SearchStatus extension and go on.

alexa isnt accurate as it only takes sample from 10 million people (although that may seem a lot, it is not accurate). It can still be used as a guide.

I am pleased google pr is dead, now you can persuade other websites to link without them claiming they have a higher pr and will therefore will not link.

Alexa rank is crap. I think it may be a migration to "trustrank" which Google now has a patent on. I could be wrong though considering the fact that Google still explains its PR on the toolbar features page.

Here are some speculations and predictions.

Google PR is alive, but no longer visible to the public. I think (again, speculation) that the Google toolbar PR was never what was actually used to determine ranking by G. The results pages seemed to have little or nothing to do with PR.

There will be Google Toolbar changes (in time), because use will drop without the PR obsession, and the obvious need to remove the "grey bar" from the exsisting toolbar.

Many SEO companies will loose clients and honest advertising will increase.

This next statement is a dream. We will stop receiving automated link exchange emails that say "I have added your site", "Your link is approved", etc. (often from sites that have NO relavence to our own, my favorite being flower shops in India).

I could go on and on.

I think they may be running a complete pagerank update. Remember, it takes many iterations to get true pagerank for all pages. I think in the past they just did incomplete calculations because of the immensity of the data set. I'm thinking they may have reached a point where they have enough hardware and processor power to recalculate the whole index.

Chris and KingSimon, I know that Alexa is not very accurate, but it still is enough to judge on site's popularity. What is the accuracy of PageRank if I myself managed to boost PR 0 to 5 in just two months not even buying a link somewhere? But show me anyone who could get his site from posiniton greater than 5M to one less than 100K in Alexa rating with the same ease. It's impossible to do if your human traffic stays low. I saw dozens of websites with PR higher than 5 but with Alexa Rank much greater than my GetSomeSoft's 112K. Since Alexa counts visitors not some abstract digits it is more objective.

I think likewise with mtishetsky. When I choose my advertising media, I also check on Alexa rankings. Websites that claims over million visitors per month and yet has 500,000 Alexa rankings is worth suspicion.

10 million Alexa users is not much, but 10 million users is a good sample size to use as a gauge and estimation.

So far, Alexa hasn't failed me when I want to make decisions on some purchases...

That is true, maybe you have persuaded me around to alexa.
I have found that the top 100,000 sites are ranked more accurately it seems, and they are looked at in more detail. I definitely value that much more.

As for page rank there are many theories going around, time can only tell as to whether it has died.

Before you go off thinking alexa rank is the greatest thing since sliced bread, may I suggest you perform a little experiment.
Download the alexa toolbar and visit your own site several times a day, get friends and family to join in it's not a solo game. Continue for 6 to 8 weeks and watch your alexa rank change. it's usually a 24 - 36 hours lag.
Then uninstall the toolbar (or let your anti-spyware tool do it ) and go back to business as usual and watch it drop.

Then tell me you would pay money for something based on a premise you yourself can manipulate at will.
All these scam marketers do is to have a bot opening browser windows with the home page set to the site they want to use for their scams selling "boost your traffic" links.

If you are buying links then buy from sites that will benefit your ROI by sending real visitors who might buy your services or products. Random visitors and scam traffic just costs money in bandwidth, and time in analysing logs

I know that it is possible to manipulate Alexa rankings but there is a certain ranking limits with what you can do.

It's will be VERY tough to hit less than 50,000 rankings and to maintain it will mean 24 hours "hits" to your sites and also eating up gigabytes of bandwidth.

My 30,000 ranking site has already taken up 17 gigabytes of bandwidth every month.

Shall we not sidetrack on Alexa and let's concentrate on Pagerank? Anyone knows what is happening? Any news 'out there' about this?
